2-Use an external microphone; a DSLR camera is still very new to shooting video therefore most DSLR’s in the market are very weak in there audio recording technology. If you are planning to use the audio from the shoot then you must use an external microphone. We have recently added a RODE shotgun mic on top of our Canon 5D MKII and Canon 7D and the result has been great. You can also connect your wireless microphone receiver directly into you DSLR’s mini jack. Another important lesson for us was that because the lens is connected to the body of a DSLR then if your lens has image stabilizer then the noise from the IS will be transferred to your DSLR’s body and therefore it will be recorded so using an external mic will eliminate that as well.

3-Keep your ISO below 2500; even though some DSLR’s are offering crazy ISO’s like 6400 and 12800 but the image quality and the grain is just not good enough. In our experience most DSLR cameras can give you a pretty good quality image up to ISO 2500.

4-Use Manual white balance; it is important to train yourself in using manual white balance instead of Auto WB. Most DSLR camera have a reasonable Auto WB when you are outdoors but not so good for indoors shooting. It is best if you learn how to use the Auto WB as a reference and a guide but always set your own WB. You can also use the WB Shift/BKT option to add or deduct certain colours from your shot. For example if you are shooting in a white tent and the ground is green grass then you might have the green reflect in the tent and make peoples face look green. That’s when you can go to your white balance Shift/BKT option and reduce the green.

5-Update your software; many of the small issues within the camera can be solved with the new software releases. If you haven’t updated your software in the past 2-3 months then you should do a search for the latest version of your cameras software and stay up to date.
